TOM FORD'S FINAL 2023 COLLECTION: ARCHIVING THE MOST ICONIC LOOKS

Written by Moe Wang

Tom Ford released its surprise AW 2023 collection not in the form of the usual runway show but in a series of three short videos shot by photographer Steven Klein. This marks Tom Ford’s final collection for his brand before departing from it after selling the brand to Estée Lauder for $2.8 billion. The collection took the form of an archival collection where it showcased many of Ford’s early works in re-created versions. The pieces highlighted were mostly Ford’s favorite and iconic designs since his debut womenswear collection in 2010. Some of the looks included in this collection were Spring 2020’s metallic fuchsia flowing skirt with a matching breastplate in a red version, Fall 2012’s off-white silk cape dress gown, and Fall 2014’s sequin jersey mini dress that Beyoncé also wore on her Mrs. Carter World Show Tour. In the video, supermodels such as Karlie Kloss, Amber Valletta, Karen Elson, and Chiharu Okunigi, were showcased in illuminative glass display cases as they posed and moved according to the orchestration of Tom Ford as the conductor. The models resembled mannequins in a store display, and the surrounding neon lights in colors of purple and blue added an overall futuristic element, which possibly hinted at the future of AI fashion in the upcoming days. Tom Ford’s design has marked some memorable moments not only in the fashion world but also in pop culture, as we see his creations being worn at the Oscars, artists’ world tours, and fashion red carpets. The videos showcased the fashion legacy that Tom Ford had contributed to the brand, and its AW 2023 womenswear collection will be available online and in stores this fall.
