The prestigious Cannes Film Festival selected the legendary French actress Catherine Deneuve as their muse for 2023, showcasing billboards of a youthful Catherine in black and white in the festival's official poster. The opening ceremony festivities were hosted by none other than Chiara Mastroianni, daughter of Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve. Following the presentation of an honorary Palme d'Or to Michael Douglas, Chiara warmly welcomed her mother to the stage, who declared the official opening of the 76th Cannes Film Festival. Disrupting the fashion world on the festival's second day, Yves Saint Laurent unveiled their venture into film production, pioneering as the first luxury fashion house to expand into the realm of cinema. The premiere of Pedro Almodóvar's Strange Way of Life marks the debut of Saint Laurent Productions, a film starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, featuring exquisite costume design by Anthony Vaccarello, a cinephile who has been deeply inspired by Almodóvar's work. The designer believes that Laurent is stepping into the future by venturing into cinema, and this opportunity will grant the brand a longevous impact. The 31-minute short film is a nod to Brokeback Mountain, a project Pedro Almodóvar declined to direct fearing limitations on his artistic freedom. For the new film, nominated for a Queer Palm award, the Spanish director sought inspiration from contemporary Westerns, focusing on desire with a touch of humor. Its bright colors and synergy with Vaccarello’s costumes create a fun and sensual experience for the viewers. Saint Laurent Productions is also involved in two other productions that will be featured in this year's festival. The fashion house had previously collaborated on the creative process of costume design, including Catherine Deneuve's iconic costumes for Luis Buñuel's 1967 film Belle de Jour. Beyond the silver screen, the cast and director of Strange Way of Life honored the brand by wearing YSL at the movie premiere. The partnership between Vaccarello and Almodóvar may continue, as the renowned director openly considers the possibility of turning the film into a full-length feature. For the new production company, this groundbreaking achievement merely marks the beginning of an exciting journey. Anthony Vaccarello aspires to delve deeper into Saint Laurent's cinematic legacy, collaborating with talented individuals who have inspired him, with plans to co-produce two to three films annually.
