Lil Nas X, rapper, singer and songwriter is back with his latest single “J CHRIST.” The superstar took a 2-year hiatus after the release of his smash-hit album Montero. The album, which featured the massively successful “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”, catapulted Lil Nas X into global recognition and fame.
“J CHRIST”, written, directed and sung by Lil Nas X, otherwise known as Montero Hill, was released on January 12 2024, alongside an electrifying music video. The video features the musician dramatically fighting in heaven and hell, soundtracked to “J Christ”. It seems that Lil Nas X is returning to the limelight with a newfound interest in spirituality and self-expression.
The release of “J CHRIST” has very quickly caught global attention in its inclusion of Lil Nas X acting as both angel and devil and Jesus Christ, sparking controversy for the song’s approach to religious themes. In response, Lil Nas X posted on his Instagram on January 15, stating “I’m not some evil demon guy trying to destroy everybody’s values and stuff like that. That’s not me.” For the musician and performer, “J CHRIST” seeks to embody themes of regeneration and new beginnings.
With lyrics including “You know when I'm back, / it's all for take / You know that I'm ready for everything” and “Last year was a quiet year / Tell 'em, "Come outside” / Baby, wе ain't tryna hide”, Lil Nas X certainly proves that he is unafraid to be authentically himself.
As the music video for “J Christ” comes to a close, a Bible verse is presented, stating that “The old has passed away; behold, the new has come,”. There can be no doubt then, that Lil Nas X is back to embrace a new era of self-love and revolution.
