AMY WINEHOUSE’S BACK TO BLACK BIOPIC: SHARING THE INSIGHTS OF THE SINGER’S AUTHENTIC STORY

Amy Winehouse back to black biopic

Amy Winehouse was a British singer-songwriter who rose to fame as a result of her critically acclaimed Grammy Award-winning album “Back to Black,” the 2006 album that her upcoming biopic takes its title from.

The biopic aims to give Winehouse her agency back by telling the story of her short but tumultuous life, according to director Sam Taylor-Johnson. Marisa Abela depicts Winehouse in the film, portraying the life and career of Winehouse, beginning with her early days as a jazz musician and culminating in her rise to fame and award-winning success.

The trailer for the film shows Winehouse in some of her most iconic fashion looks. Abela transforms into Winehouse sporting the classic beehive, high heels and hoop earrings that fans know and love. The trailer also shows details in Winehouse’s wardrobe such as chunky jewelry, floral hair accessories and the classic micro shorts that are oh-so 2000s. Abela also sported Winehouse’s iconic winged eyeliner and mascara, of course.

Abela uses her own singing voice in the film completely because she wanted to be fully authentic while performing like Winehouse was. The actress took singing lessons to be able to emulate the movements and mannerisms that Winehouse would make while performing.

The biopic will be in theaters on May 10. The movie is to tell never-before-seen stories about Winehouse’s life. While her family had no involvement in the making of the film, they felt it was time to celebrate her life and tell her story.
