ROME, THE ETERNAL CITY WELCOMES GUCCI

A MANIFESTO FOR FREEDOM IGNITES ROME WITH GUCCI CRUISE 2020

EXTRAVAGANZA

Intimate invitation through Michele’s mind and heart, Rome his native home hosted the show at the Capitoline Museums, a place where Alessandro used to visit the weekends as a child. But beside this personal invitation to Michele´s memories and source of inspiration, location had also a powerful meaning:  “It was really important to organise this show in Rome in a time when it’s important to glorify this place that is a place of freedom. All the beautiful things surrounding us from the pagan world are connected to a freedom that has sometimes been threatened. I tried to place all the characters of my movie in the best possible surroundings where they are allowed to be free,” Michele said.

Togas, robes with gold accents, Roman tunics, integrating some modern touches to it like Mickey Mouse motifs and eccentric prints, a collection inspired by the Ancient Rome and the magnificent Michele’s reinterpretation of the flower power era, one of the most successful Gucci’s signatures. A collection with a powerful message behind. “My Body, My Choice” a feminist slogan from the 70’s was stitched on the back of some of the pieces, others showed “May 22, 1978”  when abortion was legalised in Italy; and to make the statement clear enough a uterus was embroidered onto the front of a cream colored pleated long sleeve gown. The driver for Michele’s collection is clear: freedom of choice “The news I recently read in the newspaper made me reflect on the fact that women have to be respected. They should be considered as some men consider themselves,” Michele said.

Dazzling the front row of the show, were Sir Elton John, Salma Hayek, Zoe Saldaña, Saoirse Ronan, Naomi Campbell among others. For the grand finale of the show Stevie Nicks and Harry Styles the new face of the genderless Gucci fragrance “Mémoire d’une Odeur” took the stage with an impressive performance.
