Karl Lagerfeld, chief creative director of Chanel, held the Chanel pre-fall 2019 fashion show at the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lagerfeld, who is known for dazzling, larger than life events, chose this venue for the 17th annual “Metiers d’Art” show. Every year, it takes place in a different city to celebrate the brand. The ancient temple, finished in 10BC, was the centerpiece for the show. Also chosen as the centerpiece for the museum’s annual spring fashion gala, the temple made the Chanel show feel like a smaller version of the Met Gala.

The enormous prop ship was named La Pausa, after Coco Chanel’s summer Villa in the South of France.

With big, bright spotlights moving around not only on the runway, but outside as well, tourists and outsiders were given quite the show and had them wondering what was going on.

With a show filled with fun, yet dramatic looks, the designer made us feel a bit of nostalgia and took us back to the fabulous 80s. Go big or go home: Big, bold shoulders and sleeves. Heavy fabrics. Oversize coats, dresses, and skirts. Big scarves, large neck bows.
Mixing the present era with a world of fantasy, and hint of surrealism, Alessandro Michele gave the audience and the world a lot to talk about for the next few days. The runway, which looked like a surgical laboratory, had mint-green walls and lights hanging from the ceiling; as well as hospital beds. The show did not only mix lace, floral prints and sequences, but also mixed classic Italian looks with accessories never seen before.
